The main highway between Sydney and Wollongong (M1 Motorway) has recently reopened after a semitrailer rolled between Bellambi Creek and Cataract Creek on Mount Ousley road this morning.
The incident occurred around 9am Friday morning causing both southbound lanes and one of the two northbound lanes to be closed. The one vehicle accident caused significant congestion with traffic causing up to an 6km jam.
According to the AAP the driver of the semitrailer, a 55-year-old man, did not require medical assistance and was able to exit the cab without major injury. According to Nine News a NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics were called to the accident but their services were not required.
Southbound traffic was diverted down Bulli Pass, reopening the road to relieve congestion after the road was closed earlier this week in order to install rock fall protection.
Many University of Wollongong students have missed classes this morning with some individuals reporting being held up for over 3 hours. i98 Radio personality, Maje Saba, was also caught in the queue, his social media profile featuring videos and commentary on the accident.
Southbound traffic is still being effected with lanes of the Princes Motorway near waterfall being closed after a car fire sparked a bush fire this afternoon.
The semitrailer has been cleared with traffic through Mount Ousley now moving. Police are continuing their investigations into the cause of the crash.
