Fringe Before Festival

Following the success of the 2014 and 2015 festivals, the 2016 Yours and Owls Festival is expanding into the world of ‘fringe’, hosting a series of events aiming “to capture the creativity of Wollongong and set it’s imagination alight.”

The Wollongong Fringe Festival hosted by Yours and Owls, begins with an opening night party on Friday 23rd September. The free all-ages event will feature live bands, skate demonstrations, DJs, interactive light and technology installations, art shows, markets and a fully licensed bar.

If you’re a fan of surfing, be sure to attend the opening night meet and greet with pro-surfer Dion Agius as he premieres his surf flick The Smiling Bag. If you’re more interested in carving it up on dry land, KINGPIN Skate Supply have you sorted with the premiere of Pat Mckinnon’s skater film Big Boys Club.

Speaking to The Music, festival promoter Ben Tillman said the inclusion of fringe events this year was about proving Wollongong was a city both able and willing to host a proper fringe festival. Tillman says the festival is “both a celebration of what is going on within Wollongong, and also a perfect platform that allows us to bring some of the most interesting ideas and showcase them to an entirely new audience.”

The ten-day fringe festival will host over 40 events, including: outdoor film screenings, beer tours, workshops, art installations, comedy shows and even an evening with the infectiously curious Dr Karl Kruszelnicki.

The Yours and Owls Wollongong Fringe Festival runs September 23 – October 2 across various Wollongong locations.
